Virtuosity.online faculty Derek Zhi Guang Chiu named a Steinway Artist

We are so pleased to congratulate concert pianist, pedagogue and fellow Virtuosity.online faculty member Derek Zhi Guang Chiu on being named a Steinway Artist.

His artistry and thoughtful approach to both playing and teaching music make him a true pleasure to work with and to share with the world through his classes with us.

“It is truly an honour to be named a Steinway Artist. To find my name among pianists I once admired from the audience, heard live in unforgettable performances, and dreamed of becoming, is deeply meaningful. I am especially proud to share this recognition with two of my teachers, the late Joel Hastings and Solomon Mikowsky, both Steinway Artists whose artistry shaped my own musical path. To stand alongside them is a humbling reminder of the legacy we carry forward. I am also profoundly grateful to Dr. E. Gregory Butler, my mentor at the University of Windsor, whose teaching remains the backbone of my playing and the foundation of my own approach as a teacher. At the heart of both performing and teaching is the pursuit of artistry—an ever-evolving journey toward finding one’s own unique voice. This begins with sound, for it is sound that defines an artist and sets them apart. Our sound is our identity, the most personal expression we offer.
